The most common feedback I've received from people who have bought my music is, “Maxine, I've listened to your CD over and over again.  It’s great! Very inspiring”.

I’m always grateful for letters, emails, and text messages, but I was overwhelmed with joy the other day, and pondered the importance of music in my life.  While doing so a thought came across my mind.  “Is their scientific proof of the consequences of music? Are there any deep biological roots (relating to the brain development of music?)

Deep questions right! Lol! This is one of my minor thoughts that goes into the process of music from me. Haha!

Anyways, while thinking about these thoughts and a thousand more, I also wondered if our culture ignored the possibility of the deep development of music?  And if we only consider music as pure entertainment, instead of remedies, or even education.

So in my curiosity state of mind, I did some research and found I wasn't the only one who has pondered on this question.  Norman M Weinberger, a Professor of Neurobiology of learning and memory, at California University, also pondered this question and wrote a research paper on “Brain, behavior, biology, and music”.  Excellent read! Btw!

While reading a large amount of his 445372, page document, I have come to assure you that there indeed is scientific proof of music building brain sensory impressions, cognitive skills, planning movements, motor skills, feedback evaluation, learning and memory brain developments, and many more skills that benefit mankind.  It also creates a cultural commonalty within different countries and races.

Even evolutionists have recognized and considered music being created for non-human spices like animals.  For instance birds, cats, and monkeys.  This explains why these animals have a 7 second singing pattern of melody within their speech.  For instant when a bird chirps in song.

What does this have to do with me?  Well, it scientifically proved to me that there is a positive reaction to music, and a negative reaction to music that each have their own stimulants, deeper than I ever even realized or considered.

Music is art! And sadly like anything, art can damage brain development.  A lot of times we take music in as pure entertainment.  Many consider it just background music at the restaurant, something upbeat to exercise to, or the soundtrack that helped a certain scene in a movie, but music is more than that!

Music is considered on the same level as gaining a good education, attending the best college, or heading towards a great career.   My wise mother once told me “whatever you put in will come out”.  Entertainment eventually comes out.  If you like it, great! If you like the rush of entertainment but not necessarily the story line, morals or values, watch out! It will eventually affect your actions.

A world religious leader, Howard W Hunter said in his biography that “Our action is the bosom of our thoughts."

Why is this important to know? Because a great song writer writes music that does more than merely entertain.  They write music that inspires.

Last Saturday I was blessed to sing at a women’s conference. The theme was a Bible story of a woman who was ill for many years, and suffered from an issue of blood.   It was so amazing hearing about this unique women and her will power to live.  I've thought a lot about her since last week and wondered how she might have felt during that time in her life. The more I learned about this woman, the more I wanted to be like her.  The song I sang in dedication to her, it’s a Song I’m currently recording called “His Love is All I Need”.  I wrote this song a few years ago, and felt it would be perfect for Saturday’s event.  For those of you who missed it, here it is!

Why Christian Music?

A while back I was fortunate enough to sign with a record label in California. While the journey in developing myself as an artist was rewarding, it never fit quite right.  Why? Because of my Christian music. For those who are unfamiliar with me, I am singer and songwriter.  I have written pop, hip hop, country, reggae, and Christian music.  I’m currently in the process of recording a song from each genre, but like everything else it takes time.
Anyways, back to Christian music.

I was told time and time again that if I promote Pop music, I can’t promote my Christian music because “it’s breaking all the rules”.  That never really sat right with me.  I understand that I couldn't sing my Christian songs at a pop concert, but why couldn't I continue to write and record my Christian music?

As a kid Christian music is what I was mostly exposed to.  I grew up listening to gospel choirs, hip hop gospel rap, LDS music, Christian music in different languages (mostly Tongan), and Methodist hymns. My mom would even play Christian music for us as we fell asleep at night.  Christian music is basically my second language, but I've come to learn it has become a lost, unspoken language.

In the past Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Gladys Knight, all began with Christian albums.  Katy Perry and Jessica Simpson's first albums were also Christian albums, but what stopped them??  Why has no one heard their great Christian albums?  Counting Crows was formally known as a well-known alternative band, but then decided to go fully Christian. Owl City has a Christian album that Rocks as well!! But how come so many people haven’t heard about it?

Conclusion: In the end my label didn't fit. I learned from that experience that a true artist isn't created, they are born. They are born into unique situations in life that help them form their own unique style, and sound.  They are born with a God given gift that reaches beyond one genre. They are born to be free.  “Breaking all the rules” can sometimes be good, and in this case, I pray I’ll keep breaking all the rules. So if you haven’t heard my Christian album “The Light of Christ”, please check it out. (The Light of Christ)  Some of my hardest and most heartfelt times in my life have been poured into my Christian album. “The Light of Christ” is definitely one of my treasures, but you can decide that for yourself.

3 beginner tips on becoming a better song writer.

Songwriting is a beautiful skill to develop.  When learning the basics of songwriting, one must know how to catch their audience and portray the story and emotions they are trying to express.  Songs are magical, something special happens when that certain song comes on that touches your heart and speaks to you in a way that no one could ever explain.
Music is a lot like a dance.  Dancing shows emotion through actions that can’t really be expressed in writing, and music does the same.  Music triggers feelings and emotions like nothing else can, so it’s vital that songs are written in a way to awaken and enhance feelings inside an individual. With that said, here are 3 beginner tips on how to become a better song writer.

1. Make It Real.

Songs that are written from real life experiences are the best!  They’re always heart felt, and have more meaning than a song that was pulled out of a hat.  If you don’t know what to write about search your feelings, a friend's feelings, or a recent event that happened in your community.  When I began writing music and ran out of ideas for songs, I’d go to my friends who had recent breakups and other life changing experiences. I’d listen to their problems, and then write a beautiful song.  I never revealed their name, location, or specifics, I would simply replace those things with the idea of the story I was writing about.  Remember, real songs live forever.

2. Stay within the melodies (you, or someone else have composed), and always bring it back home.

Mozart was known for being one of the most talented songwriters in history.  Although he had melodies that transposed into different melodies and led into newer melodies, he always brought all those melodies back to the way they were at the beginning of the song.  Writing songs with different unique melodies is good, but it must be done in a way that is pleasing to the soul, and beautiful to the ears.  Make sure all the melodies have some familiarity, and lead back to the beginning melody of the song.  Music should take people on a journey and bring them back home. It’s exciting and familiar to the listener all at the same time. If you’re not quite sure what I’m talking about, listen to Mozart’s 5th Symphony.

3. Always make your lyrics meaningful.

Yes,  there are songs that have no meaning to them, and yes some of those have made millions, but they will not live forever.  A great songwriter writes lyrics that leave a lasting impression, which in return lives forever and never dies. When I worked as an A&R rep, new upcoming artists always dove into classical and old hit songs when wanting to do a cover, because people still purchase and love those songs everyday.  And we know why! Because they have a special meaning to them.  You can be a songwriter who’s hot for a year or two, or you can be a songwriter who’s remembered forever.  In my opinion, by writing songs with purpose and meaning, your music will never go out of style.

Happy 2015!!! If you’re like me you’ve been writing up your goals for the past three days. Why? Because we want to succeed in life. Some people find their success in work, family, jobs, money, weight loss, service and so on.  However you determine your success, just remember those you love.

It’s hard to find time to accomplish everything that needs to be done because of time.  Trust me I know! But sometimes we need to drop things and take care of those people we love.  Many times we want something so bad that we feel we have to block someone important out in order to accomplish it, but to be real with you, that’s not the case.  If we truly love someone well take a few minutes of our day to make them feel important and special.  A text message, a phone call, a prayer for them, an email saying how much their appreciated, or even a handwritten card.  We might not have tons of time to help every person, but we sure can give them what we have, even if it’s only a few minutes or even seconds.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just try it and you will! Stay tuned for my new song and music video “Women” and you’ll feel my drift.

Until then Ofas!
